Job Details

Acuity Insights is a Canadian EdTech product and research scaleup.

We have a vision, mission, and product-market fit and are on a path to expand in existing and emerging markets.

We are seeking a strategic finance leader with a strong history of FP&A (financial planning & analysis), financial modelling and strategic financial planning for SaaS tech scaleups to join our Executive Leadership team as our next VP of Finance.

This opportunity is best suited to a seasoned and purpose-oriented financial professional experienced in partnering with board members, investors, and banks and who can further elevate our executive team.

Qualified candidates also have a knack for preparing and presenting financial data and information that inspires, engages, educates, builds confidence and trust, and aligns people at all levels across an organization.

Opportunity and Impact

Joining Acuity Insights provides the opportunity to contribute to our mission of creating a world served by exceptional professionals. We support higher education institutions to identify, select, and train students and graduate physicians, nurses, teachers, engineers, future business leaders, and other professionals who will serve our communities with emotional intelligence, professionalism, and cultural competency.

As a valued member of our executive leadership team, you’ll be a thought partner to other Execs and a collaborator whose viewpoints and ideas help shape company strategy. You’ll provide actionable insights, financial analysis & options that inform business decisions, like where to allocate capital and when to pivot if an investment is not yielding the desired outcome. Your work as part of the Executive team will lead to our sustainable, ethical, and responsible growth.

As our VP of Finance, you’ll own the Finance function and top-line financial KPIs. You’ll establish Acuity Insight’s financial framework and apply your scaleup experiences and lessons learned to add sophistication to established processes and reporting systems, like forecasting, budgeting, cash flow management, and metrics tracking.

In this role, you also have the chance to lead, coach, and help progress the careers of a team of professionals who owns day-to-day operations within Finance, like accounting & corporate governance, payroll & benefits, and contracts & compliance.

Leveraging your versatility, agility and broader strategic thinking, you’ll work alongside the CEO to help develop and execute fundraising and acquisition strategies. You’ll also partner with teams, functional leaders, and contributors at all levels, bringing your empathy along with your point of view to the conversations and collaborations. For example, you’ll work with the People team on compensation, Revenue on sales forecasting, Product on pricing, Strategy on emerging markets, and Operations on optimizing workflows for efficiency.

Your success as our financial leader will strengthen our company’s financial health so we can continue pursuing our mission and addressing social issues like inequity in higher education. Your work sets our team up to navigate growth, scale, and change and enables Finance to be a strategic growth driver that unlocks the business's potential.

The VP of Finance role is a full-time remote-first position and reports to our CEO, Rich Emrich. We welcome applications from across Canada.

To thrive in the role, you:

  • Bring deep expertise in FP&A (financial modeling & analysis), forecasting, and planning.
  • Have first-hand experience with the challenges of taking a SaaS company from startup to scaleup, like growing a team from 100 to 250 people, solving flat growth, raising capital and reaching profitability.
  • Come with an understanding of the economics and metrics that impact the potential of a scaling SaaS business so you can zero in on financial issues that stand in the way of growth.
  • Have led the finance and related functions like operations for a scaleup stage company through rapid organic and inorganic growth, fundraising in growth capital, private equity, and/or public markets.
  • Are an ethical financial and executive leader who understands the human side of business and finance, leads with transparency, and recognizes and values people at all levels.

To thrive at Acuity Insights, you are:

  • Caring toward people. You show up, take time to listen and understand, encourage and support, and don’t shy away from providing feedback and mentoring and teaching others to help them grow.
  • Curious by nature and open to possibilities. You like to explore, ask questions, experiment, and learn.
  • Driven to problem-solve and biased towards action.
  • Adaptable and outcome-oriented with a preference for fluid and changing work environments where you get to build, make a visible impact and positively influence change and progress.
  • Someone with strong yet loosely held opinions.
  • Purpose-led and mission-driven in your work.

The selection and interview process:

We designed our process to deliver an equitable and memorable experience. It is a two-way discovery, and we want you to ask questions along the way so you, too, can make an informed decision.

Here are the general steps you can expect:

  • Selection. An actual human - not bots - reviews your application and assesses your experience and responses for alignment with hiring criteria.
  • Intro Conversation. If selected, you are invited to share your professional story and interests and learn more about the role & compensation, team & company.
  • Meet the Manager. Have an in-depth conversation about your relevant experiences and the company’s current and future state with CEO and co-founder Rich Emrich.
  • Meet Members of the Board. Spend some time getting to know the Board, their perspective on the company and how you’ll partner with them in your work.
  • Meet Members of the Team. Spend some time getting to know folks you’ll work closest with and learn more about the day-to-day and life at Acuity Insights.
  • Present to the Team. Prepare and deliver a presentation to the team that showcases who you are and how you think as an executive and finance leader.
  • Wait For a Final Decision. The Hiring Manager consolidates and evaluates feedback from the people you meet to make an informed decision.
  • Receive an Offer. If it’s determined you are a good match for the company, team and role, you’ll be invited to an offer conversation. The offer is contingent upon the completion of a reference check.

Key benefits:

  • Thoughtful Compensation. Equitable pay that is consistent with our policies, values and beliefs and in alignment with our business financials.
  • Employee Stock Options. You’re granted options on your start date so you can participate in and benefit from the growth you contribute to.
  • GRSP Matching Program. Save towards your financial future through our Group Registered Savings Plan with Wealthsimple. We match your contributions up to 2% of your salary.
  • Access to Health Coverage from Day 1. Enroll yourself (and any dependents) in our comprehensive health, dental, and life benefits plan through Equitable Life of Canada when you join us.
  • Flexible Work Arrangements. Work from where you want in Canada, have autonomy with working hours, and optimize your schedule for work-life balance.
  • Self-Directed Vacation. Take time off when you choose and it best suits your needs and life situation.
  • Company-wide Time Off. Turn off work for Acuity Days (a monthly bonus Friday off) and the last two weeks in December (for the Holiday Season).
  • Sick Time, Bereavement Leave & Personal Days. Take paid time off when you need to, have a medical or family emergency, experience the loss of a loved one, or need to nurture your mental health and well-being.
  • Parental Leave. Take time off to be with the newest addition to your family, whether you are a birthing parent, non-birthing parent, or growing your family through surrogacy or adoption.
  • Holistic Wellness Platform Membership. Individualized support for your physical, mental, social, financial, and nutritional well-being through our partnership with Cyno.
